I was able to attend a college basketball game at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois, on Saturday, January 11, 2020. The Northwestern University Wildcats played the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. Welsh-Ryan Arena recently underwent $110 million of renovations that were completed in late 2018. Even though it was snowing in Evanston at the conclusion of the game, with more snow expected, Northwestern fans turned out with the attendance recorded at 5,664 out of 7,039 (80.4%). My impression though was that the attendance was less than 80% of the capacity in the arena.
Coming into the basketball game, Northwestern had lost all of their four Big Ten conference games and had lost their previous five games. Northwestern played well against Nebraska and never trailed after about 10 minutes into the first half. Northwestern prevailed to beat Nebraska with a score of 62 to 57. Northwestern was coached by Chris Collins and Nebraska was coached by former Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg.
Nebraska guard Cam Mack added 11 points and 10 rebounds and sunk a 3 three-point field goal to take Nebraska within three points of Northwestern with 51 seconds left in the game. However, Northwestern forward Miller Kopp led the team with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal, and hit two late free throws with 9 seconds left in the game to clinch the win. Northwestern guard Pat Spencer also added 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal. In addition, Northwestern forward Robbie Beran added a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Below are some pictures I took while at Welsh-Ryan Arena during the Nebraska vs Northwestern college basketball game.
Years ago I had the opportunity to attend the Outback Bowl on January 1, 2010, in Tampa, Florida, at Raymond James Stadium. The Northwestern Wildcats played the Auburn Tigers in the college football bowl game.
The Tigers beat the Wildcats by a score of 38 to 35. I took many pictures while at the game, but never released them publicly on this site at the time. Below you can find some pictures I took while at the game.
I was able to attend a college basketball game at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, on Friday, December 1, 2017. The Northwestern University Wildcats played the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. Northwestern is playing all home games for the 2017 to 2018 basketball season at Allstate Arena while Welsh-Ryan Arena undergoes a renovation.
Northwestern beat Illinois by a score of 72 to 68 in overtime. Northwestern guard Scottie Lindsey came off the bench to score a team high 22 points. Northwestern forward Vic Law scored 16 points with seven rebounds while Northwestern guard Bryant McIntosh scored 14 points with six assists.
Orange wearing Illini fans greatly outnumbered purple wearing Wildcats fans in attendance. Several Northwestern football players and the head football coach Pat Fitzgerald were in attendance, as the players named to the All-Big Ten this season were recognized during a timeout. The Northwestern University “Wildcat” Basketball Band and Northwestern University director of athletic bands Daniel J. Farris were also in attendance to play songs for the crowd throughout the game. Below are some pictures I took while at Allstate Arena during the Illinois vs Northwestern college basketball game.
I was able to attend a college football game at Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The Northwestern Wildcats played the Bowling Green Falcons. The Northwestern football team beat Bowling Green by a score of 49 to 7. Northwestern University quarterback Clayton Thorson threw for 370 yards, running back Justin Jackson ran for 121 yards, and receiver Garrett Dickerson gained 150 yards on nine catches.
I walked around the Northwestern University campus a bit before the game as the weather was very nice as it was mostly sunny and in the 80s. Below are some pictures while at Northwestern including some of the recent construction projects on campus and football action.
